The Los Angeles Angels take on the Houston Astros in game one of their four-game weekend series on Thursday night from Minute Maid Park in Houston. The Angels are coming off losing two of three games to the Rangers at home, while the Astros were swept by the Rockies in a quick two-game series after losing two of three themselves against the Mariners on the road. Both teams started off the season strong but neither has looked strong over the last few weeks as the Athletics and Mariners have surged to the top of the standings and the Astros have fallen to last place in the AL West. This four-game series has the ability to really cause one team to falter or one team to surge back near the top of the division, all based on their play over the weekend. Which team will start off the series with a quick start on Thursday?
Angels Looking To Get Bats Going
The Angels’ offense, which started the season as one of the hottest in Major League Baseball, has definitely slowed down of late and put far too much pressure on the pitching and defense. Mike Trout continues to be one of the most complete players in baseball, leading the team with six home runs, second with 12 RBIs, and leading in batting average as well, hitting .393. Trout has already homered twice in two games against Houston this year and will look to continue to dominate against the divisional foe. First baseman Jared Walsh has found a way to continue his pace from the start of the year and is still hitting .327 with a team-leading 13 RBIs. Shohei Ohtani has cooled off slightly since the year started but is still hitting .310 with five home runs. Justin Upton is also hitting over .300 at .310 and has been a consistent producer over the last few years to help support some of the more big-name stars.https://platform.twitter.com/embed/Tweet.html?dnt=false&embedId=twitter-widget-0&features=eyJ0ZndfZXhwZXJpbWVudHNfY29va2llX2V4cGlyYXRpb24iOnsiYnVja2V0IjoxMjA5NjAwLCJ2ZXJzaW9uIjpudWxsfSwidGZ3X2hvcml6b25fdHdlZXRfZW1iZWRfOTU1NSI6eyJidWNrZXQiOiJodGUiLCJ2ZXJzaW9uIjpudWxsfX0%3D&frame=false&hideCard=false&hideThread=false&id=1385012198737514496&lang=en&origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwinnersandwhiners.com%2Fgames%2Fmlb%2F4-22-2021%2Flos-angeles-angels-vs-houston-astros-prediction-2128%2F&sessionId=f5898ea72b8b99eb8994351cdbe0d608c09b6814&siteScreenName=WinnersWhiners&theme=light&widgetsVersion=ff2e7cf%3A1618526400629&width=550px
According to MLB.com, Alex Cobb is slated to get the start on Thursday in what will be his third start of the season. It’s been a while since his last start after rain postponed his last one, but he’s 1-0 on the year with a 4.63 ERA and 17 strikeouts. His first start against the White Sox saw him go six innings, allowing eight hits and three runs, while he got the win in his last start against the Royals. In that one, he went 5.2 innings, allowing four hits and three runs, but striking out ten. He had a strong spring training across three starts and 7.2 innings, allowing only four hits and two earned runs, striking out eight. If Cobb can keep it going on the back-end of the starting rotation, the Angels have a good chance to find their way back into winning series after series.
The last time Cobb faced off against Houston was while he was a member of the Baltimore Orioles back in 2017 when he made two starts against the Astros. That season he took the loss in both games and pitched a combined nine innings across the two starts. He gave up a combined 18 hits, 12 earned runs, and allowed three walks while striking out seven. His numbers don’t exuberate the most confidence against Houston specifically, but he’ll be looking to change that tune on Thursday. According to ESPN, the Houston lineup has 43 at-bats and 47 plate appearances total against Cobb but has no home runs and only four RBIs total. In addition, they’re hitting .265 against him, which seems high given how few runs he’s allowed to the team.

Astros From First To Worst
Houston started the season looking like they weren’t going to let the distraction of the last 18 months deter them at all from the AL West crown, but a recent cold spell now has them looking up at everyone else in the division. Houston has lost nine of their last ten overall, and the lack of offense seems to be a large contributing factor. Kyle Tucker leads the way with four home runs and 11 RBIs but is only hitting .169 on the season so far. Yuli Gurriel leads the team with a .333 batting average and it doesn’t help that Jose Altuve, who has actually started the season off strong, remains out. Carlos Correa and Alex Bregman are both hovering around .275, but Dusty Baker needs to get the bats going from the top of the lineup to the bottom in order to generate some more runs.https://platform.twitter.com/embed/Tweet.html?dnt=false&embedId=twitter-widget-1&features=eyJ0ZndfZXhwZXJpbWVudHNfY29va2llX2V4cGlyYXRpb24iOnsiYnVja2V0IjoxMjA5NjAwLCJ2ZXJzaW9uIjpudWxsfSwidGZ3X2hvcml6b25fdHdlZXRfZW1iZWRfOTU1NSI6eyJidWNrZXQiOiJodGUiLCJ2ZXJzaW9uIjpudWxsfX0%3D&frame=false&hideCard=false&hideThread=false&id=1384961814191017990&lang=en&origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwinnersandwhiners.com%2Fgames%2Fmlb%2F4-22-2021%2Flos-angeles-angels-vs-houston-astros-prediction-2128%2F&sessionId=f5898ea72b8b99eb8994351cdbe0d608c09b6814&siteScreenName=WinnersWhiners&theme=light&widgetsVersion=ff2e7cf%3A1618526400629&width=550px
According to MLB.com, Cristian Javier is slated to make his third state on Thursday after spending a few weeks at the alternate training site building up his stamina. On the year so far, he’s an impressive 1-0 with 11 strikeouts and a 2.08 ERA. Now in his second year in the league, Javier used two appearances and three innings of spring training ball, allowing only one hit and zero runs, to jump-start his season, which has seen him be quite successful so far. Both of Javier’s starts have come against the AThletics this year, getting the win the last time out. Across the two starts, he’s combined for 8.2 innings of work, allowing six hits and two runs, walking two, and striking out 11.
Javier had one start against the Angels last year as a rookie, which is the only start of his career against them as of now. In that game, where he took the win, he got through 5.2 innings, allowing only three hits and three runs. In addition, he only allowed two walks and struck out five. According to Baseball Savant, the Los Angeles lineup only has 11 total at-bats and 12 total plate appearances against Javier. Across that span, they have no hits and only one walk, and Javier will be full of confidence to see their lineup coming to town.Free Daily Lock Pick: NBA: LA Lakers vs. Dallas – April 22nd – (100% Confidence Release)

Both those teams have been struggling of late, but the Astros especially of fallen on tough times after losing nine of their last ten games, and it’s tough to see them finding a win on Thursday as they continue to deal with injuries. Javier has been great this year, but his stamina still isn’t where he needs to be and he hasn’t pitched in a few weeks after getting demoted, which means he’ll see MLB talent for the first in a few weeks when Trout and Ohtani step up to the plate. The Angels have the third-best offense in the league and are the second-best in hitting for average and home runs. The Angels will put Javier, and the Houston bullpen, into some difficult situations that will be too much for the Houston offense to overcome as they continue to find themselves and figure out how to get out of their slump.Prediction: Angels (+105)

Both these offenses have been cold of late as they struggle to find wins, and both pitchers, while not dominant, have been able to keep their teams in games. In the first two games these two teams played this season, the over only hit in one of those games and it won’t again on Thursday, especially both teams coming difficult mid-week series. Additionally, according to covers.com, for Houston, the under is 3-0-1 in their last four games overall, is 3-0-1 in their last four games a favorite, is 3-0-1 in their last four games on grass, and is 5-0 in Javier’s last five home starts with the total set between 9 and 10.5.Prediction: Under 9
